Deserters
Deserted from the 34th Regiment of Foot, commanded by the Right Hon. Major-General
Earl of Effingham, quartered at Plymouth Dock Barracks.
THOMAS LAVENDER , five feet ten inches high, aged thirty-eight years, fresh complexion,
light-brown hair, grey eyes, round visage, has a cut over his right eye,, and is
a little marked with the small-pox, had on his regimental coat, a pompadour waistcoat,
and his regimental breeches; by occupation a labourer, born at Tervey, in the County
of Bedford, enlisted at St. Alban’s, and deserted from Plymouth the 16th day of
November, 1758.
RICHARD JONES , five feet nine inches and a half high, aged thirty-three years, swarthy
complexion, round visage, pitted with the small-pox, black hair, hazel eyes, and
thin lips; had on his regimental coat, waistcoat, and breeches; by trade a bricklayer,
born at Kanrust in Denbighshire, enlisted at Chester, and deserted from Plymouth
the 26th day of November, 1758.
BENJAMIN WRIGHT , five feet ten inches high, aged twenty nine years, fresh complexion,
light-brown hair, grey eyes, long visage, long chin, hollow eyed, and pitted with
the small-pox; had on his regimental coat, waistcoat, and breeches, by trade a bucklemaker,
born at Coleshill in the County of Warwick, enlisted at Birmingham, and deserted
from Plymouth the 26th day of November, 1758.
WILLIAM PEACH, five nine inches and a half high, aged thirty-two years, pale complexion,
light-brown hair, light-grey eyes, long visage, thick and well set; had on his regimental
coat, waistcoat, and breeches; by trade a vintner, born at Monmouth, enlisted at
London, and deserted from Plymouth the 8th day of December, 1758. N/.B. He has a
very plausible tongue, but is a great rogue.
WILLIAM MAY, five feet ten inches high, aged twenty-nine years, ruddy complexion,
round visage, is pitted with the small-pox, and is much freckled, reddish hair,
grey eyes, and is well made; had on his regimental coat, waistcoat and breeches;
by occupation a labourer, born at Taurby, in the County of Westmorland, enlisted
at Honiton, in the County of Devon, deserted from Plymouth on the 8th day of December
1758.
Whoever secures the said deserters, so as they may be brought to justice,
as perjured defrauders of the publick, of their Colonel, and of their officers;
and gives Notice to the Commanding Officer of the said regiment at Plymouth-Dock
barracks; or to John winter, Esq; in Brewer-Street, near Golden Square, London,
agent to the ‘said regiment’, shall receive twenty shillings for each, over and
above the twenty shillings allowed by Act of Parliament.
