Albert Road

There's a lot going on in Albert Road. Physically it's a long hill, arising at the top in Stoke, terminating with an entrance gate to the Yard at the bottom, before curving around to join Keyham Road. An interesting way to spend an afternoon would be to get out of the car and take a simple walk down one side of Albert Road, then up the other. There's a mixture of shops, offices, showrooms, homes, pubs - even a funeral parlour. On the downhill part of your walk don't forget to look up, to look into the distance - you will see the river and the hills of Cornwall.

Somewhere in the top quarter of Albert Road is the boundary between Stoke and Devonport. The boundary differs depending on whom you ask. St Michael's Church, recently demolished and previously located on the top right of Albert Road was in Devonport, so said the vicar and so said church documentation, yet the properties replacing it are being marketed as Stoke. Note, this is typical 'estate-agent-speak' as Stoke property prices are often higher than Devonport - but not for much longer - following our regeneration it's probable that Devonport property prices will rise. Watch the estate agents change their tune then! (Personally, I think the common practice of estate agents to market Devonport properties as Stoke is not helpful - it helps their sales targets yes, but does nothing to respect Devonport's history or our attempt to regenerate.) The new, replacement St Michael's church is on the same side of Albert Road as previous, but is now lower down, on the border of Albert Road/Exmouth Road.
